Our names are Vic, Dawn, Becky, and Allison Dubbink and we are a family owned and operated caviary. We raise and show Abyssinian's, American's, Peruvian's, Teddy's, Texel's, and White Crested's. Our biggest breeds are the Abyssinian and the White Crested, so that is what we raise the most of. Our caviary started in 2004 when my dad bought a whole herd of Teddy's. We have had pet quality cavies before, but never thought of raising them and showing them. We were already showing rabbits and we had just stopped showing the cats, and he always loved the Guinea Pigs, so when he saw that herd of winning Teddy's for sale he couldn’t help himself.
We went to our first show (Michigan State 4-H Rabbit and Cavy show) and Allison and I won BOB and BOSB Teddy, but after seeing all the different breeds we decided that we liked some of the other breeds better than the teddies. Allison fell in love with the Texel's, and I fell in love with the Abyssinian and the White Crested. Seeing as how our teddies were doing so well on the show table and we were having fun going to the shows as a family, dad let Allison and I each pick another breed to raise and show. Allison got some Texel's from Kathy Edie. I wanted White Crested's but he said that I was not allowed to start with them as he felt they were too hard to breed and show. I then Choose the Abyssinian but again I got a no as he thought they were also too hard to raise and show. I then looked at some of the other breeds and fell in love with a little TSW American Satin from Susan Lybolt. We went to another show and after talking to Sue Davies, my dad bought me two brood quality White Crested sow's and told me I needed to find a show quality boar to breed them to. I was so excited.
Our first ACBA show was in WI we just went to watch and pick up some new stock to show and breed. I got a Trio of White Crested's from Erica Shipman. Which consisted of a showable black boar, a showable black sow, and a brood quality chocolate sow I also got a Trio of White and Cream American Satin's from Denise Talbot. Allison got a new pair of texels, and Dad got a new Teddy boar from Christophers. We also got some Abyssinian's to breed for the local pet shop. We learned a lot and brought home some really nice new animals.
We have learned alot about the cavy world since those first few show's, but we are still learning things today. We have gotten very lucky and never dreamed we would be where we are today. We have made ALOT of friends along the way and they become more like family the more we see them (I just wish some of them lived a little closer).
We have been getting asked alot lately what our Caviary name means, so I just thought I would explain on the website for all who have wondered but never asked. When the time came to choose a caviary name we had alot of ideas including Shooting Star Caviary, Dubbink Family Caviary, and there were many other's concidered. We picked Rebason Cavies because it was a more unique name than most of the others. Rebason is Mine and my sisters name combined (Rebecca & Allison). Seeing as how only Allison and I were showing the cavies at that time the name fit more then than it does now. Allison is engaged and wants nothing to do with the cavies or any of the other animals anymore, and in her place my mom and Dad have started showing.
